There are two sunset points on Gili Trawangan which are the South sunset point and the North sunset point.
The ideal spot depends on the sun's position relative to the equator:
- April - September: North sunset point
- October - March: South sunset point
However, the South sunset point tends to steal the show, as most people are drawn to its charming decorations and beautiful ambiance compared to the North sunset point.
Here is where they are on the map
South sunset point
For me personally, this is the best spot to catch the sunset on the island, regardless of where the sun sits on the equator.
Just take a look at the pictures – the place is beautifully decorated and very neat! They transform the beach into a special lounge just for sunset watching.
It's huge, so even when it's packed in peak season, there's still room for everyone.
Entrance is free, no need to book a table. Just grab an empty chair, sit back, and order a cheap drink, just like I always do.
This place is called Pinkcoco Beach Club and is part of the Pink Hotel which I was never aware of before because it's pink, and it says "Adult only" 🤔
A N Y W A Y . .
What's interesting is that this spot remains quite empty during the day, only to come alive with people as sunset approaches.
After the sun dips below the horizon, you know what? It's dark! I mean, they barely have any lights.
You'll find others either strolling down the main street or enjoying movies at the night cinema, leaving the place empty again.

North sunset point
It has become the sunset point because it's the nearest spot people can find after exiting Villa Kelapa Street, which is a shortcut from the east side to the west side of the island.
Now, this place isn't really decorated but that's not a problem because people just want to see the sunset, right?
Due to its narrowness, the North sunset point can get super crowded, especially in the high season. That's why I recommend the South point.
I believe people come here either because they are looking for the nearest beach on the west side or simply because they don't know about the South sunset point.

Sunset time
I once was all set with my big fat DSLR, geared up to catch the sunset, only to realize I had missed it 🙂
Don't let that happen to you! Here's the monthly sunset schedule so you won't miss the golden hour 👍🏻
Month | Time | Best spot |
---|---|---|
January | 18:47 | South point |
February | 18:47 | South point |
March | 18:37 | South point |
April | 18:16 | North point |
May | 18:08 | North point |
June | 18:10 | North point |
July | 18:19 | North point |
August | 18:22 | North point |
September | 18:19 | North point |
October | 18:17 | South point |
November | 18:21 | South point |
December | 18:38 | South point |
Be sure to get to one of the sunset points ahead of time so you don't miss out. Arriving early provides better lighting for selfies as well.

Worth mentioning a few other spots to catch the sunset on Gili Trawangan:
- From the top of the lighthouse
- At the top of the hill
- From a sunset cruise
While I wouldn't suggest hiking up the hill or going to the top of the lighthouse, I highly recommend opting for a cruise if you're looking to enjoy the sunset in a more fancy way.
